Formal Approaches to Modelling Bio-molecular Networks 24-27 April 2012

Aims of the course

The Centre for Systems Biology  Edinburgh (CSBE) is pleased to announce that  it will be running a residential, practical workshop entitled ‘Formal Approaches to Modelling Bio-molecular Networks’ to be held from 24th April to 27th April 2012, in Edinburgh.

Modern life sciences increasingly embrace computational approaches in order to tackle the overwhelming complexity of biological processes that underlie the functioning and regulation of living systems. Among these computational approaches, modelling of bio-molecular networks (such as metabolic, signalling and gene regulation) is attracting deepening interest. Network modelling enables formalisation of bio-molecular interactions in mathematical terms, thus providing a quantitative framework to understand the complex behaviour of biological systems.

However, network modelling is a complex craft, with a broad range of techniques and approaches available, each of which may perform better for a particular task. This course will provide a comprehensive overview of several popular theoretical approaches to modelling bio-molecular networks, including Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs),  stochastic, rule-based, and process algebra. Theoretical talks and blackboard tutorials will be supported by practical sessions using relevant computational tools.

The practical schedule will be interspersed with several keynote lectures  delivered by leading computational modellers, illustrating the application of these techniques to real-world systems biology projects. We also plan to hold a poster session and evening social events, in order to  encourage interaction amongst students.

Participants

[ See acceptance criteria ]  If you’d like to apply for the course, please fill in the application form by 20th February 2012. Successful applicants will be notified in  late February/early March 2012.

The course can  pay for accommodation and subsistence for all attendees from academic institutes for the duration of the course, however,  attendees will need to fund their own travel to and from Edinburgh. Attendees should also bring a laptop computer for  the practical sessions. Applications from scientists in industry are also very welcome, subject to a fee (£500)  payable on acceptance of an offer to attend.

If you have any queries regarding this modelling workshop, then please contact us using the email address given below.
